Dr. Huda Al-Jawad is a Shite university professor of religious education specializing in Sharia law. She is married to a university professor and is the mother of two children. Her narrative focuses on the plight of academics. With the collapse of the regime, the institutions run by the government were no longer financially stable. Dr. Huda, along with her colleagues lost their income, their social standing, and their way of life. Her story is an example of the “brain drain” out of Iraq: the emigration of Iraqi professionals out of the country.
